CHINA'S DOG AND CAT FUR TRADE
Millions of animals in China are bludgeoned, strangled with wire nooses, and literally bled to death, just so their fur can be turned into clothes, trim, and trinkets. Frequently, products made from dog and cat fur are deliberately mislabeled as other species’ fur and exported globally to be sold to unsuspecting consumers worldwide.
No regulations exist to govern fur farms in China, which allows fur farmers to house and slaughter animals however they please. The resulting conditions, treatment, and excruciating deaths are horrific. Recent undercover investigations in China's Hebei Province found torture beyond belief. Chinese fur farm conditions make a mockery of the most elementary animal welfare standards. The animals are denied any type of compassion.
Dogs and cats are skinned alive after being pulled from their cramped cages. Workers throw animals to the ground and bludgeon them with metal rods or slam them against any hard surface available. This mangles their bones and sends these defenseless creatures into convulsions, but rarely causes immediate death. Some animals are subjected to anal or genital electrocution, which paralyzes — but does not kill — them.
Often the animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. The animals kick and writhe as their skin and fur are cut off their bodies. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of struggling animals to allow a clean cut. When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals' heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a growing pile. Some animals are still breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. They are literally skinned alive!
HOW YOU CAN HELP
- Call, write, and email the U.S. Chinese Ambassador and urge China to ban fur farming, as well as any future importing and exporting of fur.
